As the calender turns to February, the wrestling season is coming down the stretch with wrestlers looking to make a final push towards Omaha. Wrestlers like NC’s Zach Huenefeld (top left), Gage Friesen (top right) and Wyatt Urkoski (bottom) have proved to be contenders as they made the finals at the Doniphan-Trumbull Invite. Area wrestlers will look to finish the regular season strong this week.

At the Doniphan-Trumbull Invitational, wrestlers from High Plains Community and Nebraska Christian Eagles demonstrated impressive skill and resilience. The High Plains Storm saw Aaron Brown (144 pounds) kick off with a challenging start, but he claimed a victory over Kyson Gilliland of Shelton, contributing 1.0 team point to his team’s effort. Gage Friesen, in the same weight class, showcased his dominance throughout the tournament, ultimately placing second and adding 20.0 team points.

Bison hoops gets big win over Wood River ahead of big week

In an electrifying matchup last Friday, the Central City Bison boys’ basketball team bolstered their season record to an impressive 13-2 with a commanding 48-35 victory over Wood River. The Bison, displaying their trademark tenacity, turned a first-quarter deficit into a triumph, underscoring their readiness for the upcoming Lou-Platte Conference Tournament.

Their achievements began at the annual Lou-Platte Conference Wrestling Tournament, where a number of Bison wrestlers battled their way to a conference medal, followed by a dominant display during Tuesday night’s home dual.

Last Friday the Cross Country community was dealt a hefty blow with the passing of long-time Nebraska Christian head coach Scott Johnson. Coach Johnson was known and well respected for his kind heart and love of the sport, but it was his love of God that was his true passion. We send our love to the Johnson family and all Coach Johnson’s former athletes.
