Scheduled over four days, the event will see Central City’s athletes compete on Wednesday and Thursday in Class B, while Nebraska Christian and High Plains take their marks on Friday and Saturday in Class D. Here’s what fans can expect from our local heroes: Central City Competitors Boys Team: Wyatt Dent (Sophomore, Comp#: 65): Competing in Boys Long Jump (21-10.50), 100 Meter Dash Prelims (11.06), and the 4x100 Meter Relay (43.09).

Kernels battle to mixed results at state

The Central City/Centura Kernels opened their 2024 NSAA State Baseball Tournament campaign with a decisive 4-0 victory over Douglas County West last Saturday, showcasing their strength at the outset of the tournament. The game remained a nail-biter with no runs scored until a sudden burst in the fifth inning secured the win for the Kernels. Noteworthy performances included sophomores Conner Erickson and Jakob Ruhl, who contributed significantly to the team’s six hits. Ruhl was also stellar on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings of one-hit ball, fanning nine, and maintaining the shutout.

Heroics in the Seventh: Central City/Centura Kernels Clinch District Title

In a dramatic conclusion to the Class C-3 District Championship, the Central City/Centura Kernels claimed victory with a last-minute offensive surge that propelled them past Roncalli Catholic with a 1-0 walkoff win at Kernel Field. This victory not only underscores the team’s defensive excellence and pitching prowess but also secures their fourth consecutive appearance at the NSAA State Baseball Championships. The game’s pivotal moment unfolded in the bottom of the seventh inning, where sophomore Hayden Murphy sparked a rally with a crucial base hit that found him advancing to second base. With the game on the line and the tension palpable, junior Colter Lueders stepped up to the plate. Demonstrating composure and precision, Lueders hit a decisive single with a groundball that sliced through to left field, allowing Murphy to dash home for the game-winning run.

Eagles claim Cross County Invite title

On a somewhat windy day, the Lady Eagles breezed to a win on Thursday at the Cross County Invitational, piling up 150 points, while Shelby-Rising City finished 2nd with 94 points. Sheridan Falk once again had a good day, winning both the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as leading off the winning 4 X 400 relay team. Teaming with Falk on the 4 X 400 were Izzy Brumbaugh, Gracie Hackel and Emma Rathjen. The winning time of 4:17.2 was a season best.

At the Class B-5 District track meet in Aurora, the Central City Bison left their hoofprints all over the competition, racing ahead to secure coveted spots at the NSAA State Track and Field Championships. With district titles swinging in the wind and personal records shattered on the track, the Bison pranced away with an impressive array of accolades.

As many of you know, I am a big fan of our local teams and that includes the Central City/Fullerton, Central City/Fullerton/Centura and Central City/Centura Kernels. I've been there from day one, watching as the Kernels etched their names into the heart of our community. As they make their fourth consecutive appearance at the NSAA State Baseball Tournament, it’s impossible not to reflect on the journey that has brought us here. This year is especially significant; it marks the first chapter without Fullerton, an integral part of our storied co-op history since the Kernels beginning.
